The Council for Economic Education Launches New York City Teacher Training Program as part of The McGraw-Hill Companies Financial Literacy Now New York Campaign

Financial Literacy Now: New York

NEW YORK CITY, November 3, 2009 -- Today the McGraw-Hill Companies announced it is spearheading an ambitious new campaign with several non-profit partners to help New Yorkers better manage their personal finances. With a major emphasis on supporting educators, the campaign expects to provide in-class training to 800 teachers, and by extension benefit up to 80,000 students, this year alone.

The newly established campaign, Financial Literacy Now: New York, is a joint effort of The McGraw-Hill Companies, the Council for Economic Education, Literacy Partners, Inc., the New York Public Library, Talking Fin Lit and W!SE. The campaign will leverage the expertise of McGraw-Hill and its non-profit partners to help New Yorkers learn more about basic economic principles, including savings and interest, as well as more complex concepts like mortgage terms and conditions and diversification in investing.

The Council for Economic Education will play its part in the campaign by offering a range of professional development opportunities to more than 600 teachers in the New York metropolitan area.

The CEE will host a series of 20 in-person teacher training workshops for K-12 teachers in economics and personal finance over the course of 2009-2010. Workshops will be held at the CEE's newly launched HSBC National Center for Economic and Financial Education in midtown Manhattan.

The Financial Literacy Now New York Campaign brings together the combined resources and talents of some of New York's most reputable educational organizations, including the CEE, Literacy Partners, Inc., the New York Public Library, Talking Fin Lit and W!SE. It was developed in response to the increasing demand for economic and financial education among adults and young people across the city.

Harold McGraw III, chairman, president and chief executive officer of The McGraw-Hill Companies notes that the need for enhancing economic education has never been greater:

"Few things are as important to America's economic competitiveness as our ability to provide a high-quality education to all of our citizens, and achieving financial literacy is a critical component of the 21st century skills needed to be successful today," said Mr. McGraw. "…I am excited about the work we will be doing with our outstanding partners to help all New Yorkers achieve the promise of financial security and prosperity."
